Octopus © Roger Dean 1972
It was the management company that approached me to design this cover, which by 1972 was increasingly unusual, as by then, bands would contact me directly. Gentle Giant's first album cover was an excellent painting by George Underwood and I thought the US release of Octopus had a great cover.
I was told that my cover could not be used in America for legal reasons. The American cover credited John Berg with concept and design but it also credited Kenny Kneital with design. Likewise Art was credited to Fluid Drive and illustration to Charles White III and lettering to Michael Doret. It may seem like a lot of people but the result was great and Storm usually worked this way and he achieved a lifetime of brilliant results.
For me though art and design were an integrated process and I enjoyed working on all the elements. The starting place was the background a painting of a sinister and muddy sea floor that hinted at a lurking octopus even before the octopus was painted. I wanted to maintain the sinister look with the octopus, colouring it bright red and taking the eye from a ray.
